Bejarano to Ride Point Determined in Santa Anita Derby

Rafael Bejarano, whose list of Kentucky Derby (gr. I) mounts grows each day, has been named by trainer Bob Baffert to ride Point Determined in the Santa Anita Derby (gr. I) April 8. Victor Espinoza, who was originally named to ride the colt, has a prior commitment that day aboard Balance in the Ashland Stakes (gr. I).

Bejarano was recently named to ride First Samurai in the Toyota Blue Grass Stakes (gr. I) April 15, and will be aboard Flashy Bull in Saturday's Florida Derby (gr. I).

Bejarano secured the mount on First Samurai when co-owners Bruce Lunsford and Lansdon Robbins III decided to make a change. The colt's regular rider, Edgar Prado, also rides Barbaro in the Florida Derby, Keyed Entry in the Wood Memorial (gr. I) and Strong Contender in the Blue Grass, and was unable to make a commitment at this time to First Samurai.

The bottom line of all this jockey shuffling is that, following the major preps, there may be as many as four live Derby mounts available.

In his Derby debut, Bejarano finished eighth aboard Andromeda's Hero in the 2005 classic.
