California Champion Calkins Road Retired

Former California-bred 3-year-old champion Calkins Road has been retired and will stand stud at Rocking Horse Ranch in Santa Ynez, Calif.

The 7-year-old Calkins Road is by Illinois Storm, out of the Lost Code mare Little Code, and was bred by owners Thomas and Deborah Shapiro. His stakes wins included the California Cup Classic, Snow Chief Stakes, and Joseph T. Grace Handicap.

The Snow Chief and Cal Cup Classic wins came in 2002, when Calkins Road earned $374,100 and was named California's champion 3-year-old.

He also placed in the Affirmed and Native Diver Stakes (both gr. III).

Calkins Road was out of action for more than a year beginning in 2004. Since he returned in December, the chestnut had failed to make an impact in three races. In his last start, the Crystal Water Handicap on the Santa Anita turf, he finished eighth.

Trained by John Shirreffs, Calkins Road won five of 21 starts during a six-year career and earned $520,735.
