$2,395,000 Keeneland Buy-Back Probably Will Be Trained By Mott

A royally-bred A.P. Indy -- Dream Supreme filly brought the highest bid of $2,395,000 at Tuesday's Keeneland juvenile auction. But she was bought back by her breeder, George Steinbrenner's Kinsman Farm. Had she sold for that amount, or even a little bit less, she would have set the world record for a filly offered at a sale of 2-year-olds in training. But the mark still belongs to Dubai Escapade, who brought $2 million at the 2004 Barretts March select juvenile auction.

"It was close, but not close enough," said Edward Sexton, the farm manager for Florida-based Kinsman Farm. "She's a good filly. If she brought the money, we would sell her. If not, we would bring her home and race her. She was in there for people to buy her. She was there for sale.

"We're not a bit disappointed," he continued. "She's a top-class filly, a stakes filly. Money is not the issue with Mr. Steinbrenner. We've got the whole family. More than likely, she'll be going to Bill Mott. I'm surprised she didn't get the money, but not really, because it's a bad sale. Compared to this time last year, it's a very bad sale. The (catalogue) pages are here, but the quality of the horses (physically) isn't matching the page."

The dark bay or brown filly, whose first and second dams were grade I winners, is a full sister to Crystal Current, winner of the Suncoast Stakes earlier this year at Tampa Bay Downs and third in the Florida Oaks. Crystal Current is trained by Mott, who attended the Keeneland April sale and was happy to hear her 2-year-old full sister will likely be headed to his barn.

"I loved her when I saw her in a paddock when she was a yearling," he said. "I didn't see her again until she had turned two, and when I found out she was going to go in the sale, I was disappointed about that. But it worked out. There's a lot to her. She has very good conformation. I trained her mother, and she (the A.P. Indy filly)is probably a little bit bigger than her dam. She's also bigger than her full sister, who is very nice looking and well-balanced."
