Tagg Takes Cautious Route With Funny Cide

(from Pimlico notes)
Funny Cide returns to the site of his smashing victory in the 2003 Preakness (gr. I) in Saturday's William Donald Schaefer Handicap (gr. III) at Pimlico Race Course, where he will face six other older horses going 1 1/8 miles on the main track.

The 6-year-old New York-bred gelding is the 8-5 favorite on the morning line for the $100,000 Schaefer.

Trainer Barclay Tagg also entered Funny Cide in the Pimlico Special (gr. I)on Friday, but opted for the Schaefer. Funny Cide has recovered from a nagging back injury and ended an eight-race losing streak in the King's Point Handicap at Aqueduct.

Tagg is determined to put together a conservative schedule to help Funny Cide regain his confidence.

"This is the right spot for him," Tagg said.

Nick Zito entered Andromeda's Hero, a 4-year-old son of Fusaichi Pegasus  who was second in the Belmont Stakes (gr. I) last year. In his most recent start, Andromeda's Hero was third in the May 5 Alysheba at Churchill Downs.

"I like the way he's coming around now," Zito said. "He's an older horse. His last race in the Alysheba was good. He's a horse that could thrive on running a lot.

"Sometimes you've just got to make the best of what you've got. You're dealt cards and if you don't want to throw them in you've got to play. Right now, we want to play and I think this is a good race for him. He'll fit good with these horses. I think we'll be OK."
