Canani Adds Shining Energy to Gamely Cast

(from Hollywood Park notes)
Trainer Julio Canani said Wednesday that Shining Energy would join the lineup in the $300,000 Gamely Breeders' Cup Stakes (gr. IT) for fillies and mares at 1 1/8 miles on turf at Hollywood Park Monday.

Energizing a relatively small field for the Memorial Day feature, the 4-year-old filly will try to duplicate the stretch kick at nine furlongs that has enabled her to win turf stakes in California at 6 ½ furlongs and one mile. In two previous tries at 1 1/8 miles, Shining Energy has been unplaced.

By Rahy out of the Lycius mare Miss Universal, Shining Energy began her career in France, then won the San Clemente Handicap (gr. IIT) last year at Del Mar and captured the American Beauty Handicap in her last start at Santa Anita on April 8.

Shining Energy has won four of 14 starts and earned $293,937 for owners Terry Lanni and Bernie Schiappa. Canani has not named a rider.

Shining Energy is expected to battle the Bobby Frankel-trained duo of Argentina (Alex Solis) and Eternal Melody (David Flores), Santa Barbara Handicap winner Sharp Lisa (Corey Nakatani) and Maryland shipper Film Maker (Victor Espinoza) in the Gamely.

Millionaire mare Film Maker is scheduled to be flown from Baltimore to Los Angeles Friday, according to trainer H. Graham Motion.

Also under consideration for the race are Memorette, Dalicia and Ticker Tape.

Memorette worked five furlongs on the main track in 1:00 for trainer Bill Currin, who said he is debating between the Gamely and $175,000 Milady Breeders' Cup Handicap (gr. II) on the main track on June 3 for the 4-year-old filly. Memorette won the Fran's Valentine Stakes on the Hollywood turf April 30.
