Retired Canadian Racing Executive J.F. Howard Dead

J.F. "Jake" Howard, retired chairman of the Woodbine Entertainment Group, died June 3 following a lengthy battle with cancer. He was 81.

Howard, who was chairman of WEG from 1999 to 2001 and honorary chairman at the time of his death, raced the homebred stakes-winning half-sisters Millashand and Mordacious in the name Wayward Stable. Both were stakes winners at Woodbine.

Millashand won the 1999 Lady Angela Stakes, and Mordacious, bred by Howard and Donald Ross, captured the 1996 Ontario Lassie Stakes and the 1997 Flaming Page. Both runners were trained by Howard's son, Ian.

Howard also was the breeder of earlier stakes winners Ptermagant and Judge Carson.

In addition to his son, his survivors include his wife, Nancy.
