According to personnel at the New Bolton Center in Kennett Square, Pa., the injured 3-year-old colt Barbaro has received more than 40,000 e-mail messages at the Web site set up for fans to send messages and get-well wishes to the winner of the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I).Barbaro, who is recovering from a shattered hind leg sustained at the Preakness Stakes (gr. I) on May 20, continues to please veterinarians at the George D. Widener Hospital for Large Animals. He remains in intensive care at the hospital at the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine's New Bolton Center."He's doing great," said Gail Luciani, spokeswoman for the veterinary school.
While Barbaro continues his recovery, his contemporaries from the 3-year-old crop will take to the track Saturday for the Belmont Stakes (gr. I). Although he will not be in the race, Barbaro will be a focal point of the television programming on the ESPN (noon-5 p.m., Eastern) and ABC (5-7 p.m.) networks.
