Yate's Black Cat Tries Luck in Jefferson Cup

Yate's Black Cat had to win three times before he officially made it to the winner's circle, but he is favored to make a quick return in Saturday's $200,000-added Jefferson Cup (gr. IIT) for 3-year-olds at nine furlongs on the Churchilll Downs turf.

The son of Black Minnaloushe was disqualified from maiden victories at Hawthorne Park and Gulfstream Park before he finally took a Churchill downs allowance race to officially score his first career victory for trainer Dale Romans.

Yate's Black Cat is the 5-2 morning line choice over six Jefferson Cup rivals. Those opponents include the Todd Pletcher-trained Tahoe Warrior, who finished third in Keeneland's Forerunner, and Mill House's Brilliant (4-1), a Neil Howard-trained son of War Chant who is unbeaten on the grass after winning a pair of allowance races on Churchill Downs' Matt Winn Turf Course.

Making his turf debut is Mike McCarty's Storm Treasure (4-1), a Steve Asmussen-trained son of Storm Boot who finished 11th to Barbaro in the Kentucky Derby presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I) and was runner-up to Sinister Minister in the Toyota Blue Grass (gr. I) at Keeneland. Shaun Bridgmohan will ride Storm Treasure.

Other Jefferson Cup contenders include Mercurious (9-2), Obi Wan Kenobi (6-1) and Act of God (20-1)
