Danzig's Beauty, dam of major sire Distorted Humor
, was euthanized June 17 because of complications from three bouts of colic since delivering an Empire Maker
filly April 27. The 19-year-old daughter of Danzig was owned by Jess Jackson's Stonestreet Farm and resided at that Lexington farm.
Distorted Humor has sired grade I winners Funny Cide, Flower Alley, Awesome Humor, Commentator, and Fourty Niners Son. Funny Cide was champion 3-year-old male of 2003 following wins in the Kentucky Derby (gr. I) and Preakness Stakes (gr. I). Distorted Humor, who ranked second on last year's leading sires list by progeny earnings, ranks 10th this year. He stands for $150,000 at Bill Casner and Kenny Troutt's WinStar Farm near Versailles, Ky. As a racehorse, Distorted Humor was a two-time grade II winner who earned $769,964.
Danzig's Beauty produced a dozen named foals, six of which are winners, including additional stakes winner Dancing Gulch (by Gulch
). Jackson bought Danzig's Beauty, in foal to Lemon Drop Kid
, for $350,000 at the 2004 Keeneland November breeding stock sale through Narvick International from Nuckols Farm, agent. Danzig's Beauty produced a filly the following year. That filly, now a yearling, and the newborn Empire Maker filly reside at Stonestreet.
Danzig's Beauty, who was produced from the Mr. Leader mare Sweetest Chant, was bred in Kentucky by Charles Nuckols Jr. and Sons and raced for Russell Reineman. Trained by Woody Stephens, Danzig's Beauty won her first three races, including the 1989 Gardenia Stakes (gr. II) at Meadowlands, and was second in the Acorn Stakes (gr. I) at Belmont Park the following year. She retired that year with three wins from eight starts and earnings of $205,806.
