What are the odds of a son of Mecke winning the $100,000 Mecke Handicap at Calder Race Course? On Tuesday, July 4, they were about 7-to-2 -- those were the off-time odds on Trilogy Stable's 6-year-old horse Magic Mecke in the holiday feature race at Calder Racecourse.
Ridden by jockey Cecilio Penalba, Magic Mecke defeated Keep Cool by 2 1/4 lengths, while Bob's Proud Moment finished third. The even-money favorite, Lord Robyn, was fourth in the field of just five horses.
Trained by Eddie Plesa, Jr., Magic Mecke covered the 1 1/8 miles over a turf course labeled 'good' in 1:49.28. It was the horse's first race since finishing fifth in the Bonnie Heath Turf Cup here last fall on Florida Million day. The victory marked Magic Mecke's sixth lifetime win from 19 starts. All of his success has come over the Calder turf course. Magic Mecke returned $9.40, $4.40 and $4.20.
"He's just truly remarkable considering all the time off and problems he's had," Plesa said. "He trained very well and has been going sound. At one time or another, he's had physical problems on all four corners of his body. Hopefully, he'll stay sound for a while."
"This horse finishes so well that our plan was always to sit back and make a good run in the stretch," jockey Penalba said. "The two horses setting the pace (Keep Cool and Lord Robyn) went very slowly up front, so at the three-eighths pole I was a little worried. At that point I said to myself they might not come back to me but if we are going to win it I have to stick to the plan and trust that he'll be able to run them down. He did that pretty well."
Magic Mecke was bred in Florida by his owner.
