Honey Ryder is Formidable Presence in Robert G. Dick Memorial

Edited press release

Glencrest Farm's Honey Ryder is the formidable presence in the $300,000 Robert G. Dick Memorial Breeders' Cup at Delaware Park July 15. The 1 3/8 turf affair for fillies and mares has attracted a field of nine. Scheduled as the sixth race, it has an approximate post time of 3:00 p.m. (EST)

The defending Robert G. Dick Memorial Breeders' Cup champion, Honey Ryder, will be the heavy favorite once again. Last year, the Kentucky-bred millionaire mare trained by Todd Pletcher was bet down to 4-5 before notching a 5 1/2 length triumph in the race.

In her last start, Honey Ryder, a 5-year-old daughter of Lasting Approval, won by a length in the $150,000 grade II Sheepshead Bay Handicap at Belmont Park May 27. Previously capturing the $150,000 grade III Orchid Handicap at Gulfstream Park April 1, Honey Ryder sports a 2006 record of two wins and a third from three starts.

The fresh and ready filly is Prince Faisal Salman's Olaya. Since being imported to North America from France last year, the 4-year-old daughter of Theatrical has had two wins and two seconds. In her last effort April 1, the H. Graham Motion-trained Olaya ran second, beaten 4 lengths by Honey Ryder in the Orchid Handicap at Gulfstream Park. Bred in Kentucky, Olaya has run well off of a previous layoff. In her first start in North America, the grade II Long Island Handicap at Aqueduct Nov. 5, she posted a neck victory in her first attempt against older foes.

"She is coming into the race super," said Motion. "I backed off of her after Florida. I felt like she had run hard down there, and I have really had this race in mind for her since we left Florida with the idea of giving her a little freshening in between. She probably runs well fresh."

Another advantage for Olaya is the success her trainer has enjoyed in past divisions of the Robert G. Dick Memorial, winning five of the last seven. Last year, however, Motion trained Sweet Science to a second-place finish behind Honey Ryder. Olaya has a career record of four wins, four seconds and a third from 12 starts with earnings of $234,452.
