One-Eyed Colt Casino Evil Wins Round Table

(from Arlington Park report)
Haps Stables' Casino Evil, who lost his right eye in a paddock accident as a foal, knew where the to find the finish wire in order to take the $150,000 Round Table Breeders' Cup Stakes for 3-year-olds by a nose over Barely Union Scale on Saturday at Arlington Park.

Francisco Torres rode the son of Salt Lake who covered the 1 1/8-mile distance over a fast track in 1:50.12.

The Michael Tomlinson trainee battled Barely Union Square throughout the race as the duo alternated on the lead through fractions of :24.94 seconds for the opening quarter-mile, :48.90 seconds for the half, a three-quarter mile split of 1:12.76. Casino Evil edged away to a half-length lead at the eighth pole and held on in the drive to the wire.

"This horse has had to overcome so much," said Torres. "His blind side is on the right side, so he had to run with my confidence. What a race he ran. We were running all together as one and we got there all together as one."

The Round Table victory, his fourth in 15 starts, helped ease the sting of two recent runners-up finishes at the local oval. The $90,000 winning share more than doubled his bankroll to $179,930.

Barely Union Square was a clear second in the field of nine sophomores, finishing 3 1/4 lengths clear of High Blues. Irish Majesty, 8-5 favorite Admiral's Arch, Creative Force, Tally Up, Chin High, and Devilofarush completed the order of finish.

Casino Evil, second choice in the wagering at odds of 7-2, returned $9.60, $4.80, and $3.20. Barely Union Scale paid $9 and $4.60. High Blues Paid $4.40.
