Stream Cat Lukewarm Favorite in American Derby

Edited release
Fab Oak Stable and Team Derby Dreams Stable's Stream Cat has been installed as the lukewarm 9-2 morning line favorite in the 14-horse field of 3-year-olds entered for Saturday's $250,000 American Derby (gr. IIT), presented by Jack Daniel's, at Arlington Park.

The 1 3/16-mile grass test is the second leg of the "Mid-America Triple" that began with the grade III Arlington Classic, presented by Woodford Reserve at 1 1/16 miles on July 1 and concludes with the grade I $400,000 Secretariat Stakes on Aug. 12. The American Derby is also one of three graded stakes races on turf that comprise Arlington's Million Preview Day that also includes the grade III $200,000 Arlington Handicap for older runners and the grade III $150,000 Modesty Handicap for fillies and mares.

A son of Black Minnaloushe, Stream Cat comes into Saturday's race off a sixth-place finish in the $1 million Colonial Turf Cup in Virginia last month. Previously, the Patrick Biancone-trained sophomore captured the Grade III Crown Royal American Turf at Churchill Downs on Kentucky Oaks Day and the $150,000 USA Stakes at Lone Star Park on May 29. Julien Leparoux, the nation's leading rider in races won, has a return call aboard Stream Cat.

Arlington Classic winner Kingship, owned by Oxbow Racing LLC, looks to keep his bid to become the first horse since Honor Glide in 1997 to sweep the Mid-America Triple. The Ronny Werner-trained son of King Cugat held on to win the Triple's first leg earlier this month after easily breaking his maiden over the Churchill turf course in June. Robby Albarado has the mount.

Dermot Weld, Ireland's all-time leading trainer and a three-time winner of the American Derby, sends Dr. Ronan Lambe's Golden Arrow to Arlington from his Irish base. The son of Danehill, who will be making his United States debut in the American Derby, has been competitive in group stakes competition across the Atlantic and in his last start closed well to finish fourth in the listed NetJets Celebration Stakes at The Curragh. His regular jockey, Irish riding star Patrick Smullen, will be in the saddle on Saturday.
