Untouched Talent Has Edge in Sorrento S.

The seven 2-year-old fillies entered for Saturday's $150,000 Sorrento Stakes (gr. I) are short on experience, but the winner will take a big jump toward the Del Mar Debutante (gr. I) on Sept. 4.

Favored to make that leap in the 6 1/2-furlong Sorrento is the nicely bred Untouched Talent, whose only start produced a win in the Juan Gonzalez Stakes last month at Pleasanton's Alameda County Fair meeting.

The Jeff Bonde-trained daughter of Storm Cat out of the A.P. Indy mare Parade Queen ran off to win the five-furlong dash by an eased-up 3 1/2 lengths.

Allen Severinsen, who has been deputizing for Bonde at the Del Mar barn, said of the filly, "She has quite a bit of talent, and she's been training forwardly since being here. She went an easy half on Tuesday with Victor Espinoza up. We just wanted her to do a little something, and Victor was very happy."

Espinoza has the call to ride Untouched Talent, the only stakes winner in the field.

All six of her rivals have won at least one race, however, and two others --– Shawklit Sundae and Smart n'Quiet – have stakes experience.

Shawklit Sundae was fourth in the July 1 Landaluce Stakes at Hollywood Park but was disqualified and placed fifth. Smart n'Quiet has not placed in three stakes at Hollywood Park and Del Mar.
