Jockey Jean-Luc Samyn suffered a broken collarbone and a fractured pelvis in a training accident on the main track at Saratoga Race Course on Tuesday morning. The oldest active jockey in the Spa colony –- he will be 50 on Nov. 6 –- Samyn was injured when the bridle broke on an unraced horse for Hall of Fame trainer H. Allen Jerkens.Samyn's wife, Antoinette, said that he was recovering in Saratoga Hospital while awaiting results of x-rays and other tests and that the would likely be returning to New York "The crack in his pelvis is pretty clean, but he was injured on the same side as his collarbone, his left side, so he can't even use crutches," she said.
Samyn was winless in 13 mounts this meet. "There are not a lot of jockeys that will work seven days a week any more," said Samyn's agent, Doug Hatten. "But there he was, on a dark day, breezing horses. It's just a shame."
