Brother Derek Flashes :58 4/5 Work at Del Mar

(from Del Mar notes)
Brother Derek added an exclamation point to his training regimen Sunday morning for trainer Dan Hendricks with a sterling five-furlong breeze in :58 4/5 at Del Mar. Brother Derek has not raced since finishing fourth in the Preakness (gr. I), but is being pointed for Saturday's one-mile El Cajon Stakes.

Sunday's work completed Brother Derek's main preparation for his return.

"It was a very nice work," Hendricks said. "He did it easy. Another horse broke in on him, and it worked out very nice."

Hendricks said the "other horse" episode wasn't planned, but he said it worked out fine.

"It's a little crowded out there during training, and sometimes a horse will break in on you," he said. "It was fine for us."

As for running in the El Cajon, Hendricks said, "I have to confirm it 100 percent with Mr. [Cecil] Peacock that it's the best thing to do and make sure Saturday's race fills."

Brother Derek, who dead-heated for fourth in the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I) with eventual Belmont Stakes (gr. I) winner Jazil, is also nominated to the $400,000 Del Mar Derby (gr. IIT) on Sunday.
