Familiar Foes Battle in Lady's Secret BC

(from Oak Tree at Santa Anita release)
Defending champion Healthy Addiction is among five fillies and mares that could advance to bigger things with a winning effort Sunday in the Lady's Secret Breeders' Cup Handicap (gr. II) over the Santa Anita main track.

The 1 1/16-mile event is a major springboard to the Emirates Airline Breeders' Cup Distaff (gr. I) Nov. 4 at Churchill Downs.

The lineup includes Healthy Addiction along with 2005 second and fourth-place finishers Star Parade and Hollywood Story. Each went on to the 2005 BC Distaff while making little impact in the race, which was won by 30-1 Pleasant Home.

Healthy Addition, coming off a victory in Del Mar's Clement L. Hirsch Handicap (gr. II) on Aug. 6, is likely to be a slight choice with Victor Espinoza at the controls for trainer John Sadler and owner Pamela Ziebarth. The 5-year-old mare was assigned high weight of 120 pounds.

The rivalry among Healthy Addition, Star Parade and Hollywood Story has resulted in a pair of wins for the first two. Hollywood Story beat both in the Vanity Handicap (gr. I) on July 2 at Hollywood Park, site of each of her four career wins.

Star Parade, a 7-year-old Argentine-bred mare, is the field's most accomplished runner with earnings of $1,223,219 for trainer Darrell Vienna and owner Gary A. Tanaka. Her career record is 9-8-5 in 34 starts.

After a poor effort on turf in her last start when tenth in Del Mar's Palomar Breeders' Cup Handicap (gr. IIT), Vienna said the race would be her last over that surface. "That's it, never again," said Vienna. "The only time she will try grass again is when she eats it."

At age 5, Healthy Addition has posted a 9-6-1 record in 21 lifetime starts for earnings of $882,837. The Kentucky-bred has shown an affinity for Santa Anita's main track with a 5-4-0 mark in 10 stars over the layout.

Neuilly, who has won four of six career starts for trainer Bobby Frankel, and trainer Bob Baffert's Downthedustyroad, who is three for seven, will be seeking their first graded stakes victories in the Lady's Secret.
