Unbeaten Straight Faced Returns in FSS Finale

Walter Donnelly's undefeated 2-year-old colt Straight Faced will be the center of attention in the $400,000 In Reality Division of the Florida Stallion Stakes (FSS). In the $400,000 My Dear Girl Division, trainer Eddie Plesa Jr. sends out three of the seven 2-year-old fillies entered at Calder Race Course.

The 25th anniversary editions of the 1 1/16 miles Florida Stallion Stakes finales highlight the track's $1.6 million "Festival of the Su"n program that includes six other stakes led by renewals of the $200,000 Calder Derby (gr. III) and $200,000 Calder Oaks.

The FSS is for progeny of stallions standing in Florida.

A $48,000 OBS March 2-year-old purchase, Straight Faced won his first three starts easily, but had to work hard last out in the seven-furlong Affirmed Division of the FSS six weeks ago to hold off Villainage by a half-length. Green Vegas finished third, beaten only a length for it all.

Both of those rivals will be back to try and foil Straight Faced's bid to become the sixth colt to sweep the 'open' divisions of the FSS.

Villainage, who hails from the Plesa barn, chased Straight Faced home in the last three tries after the homebred son of Trippi captured his first two starts. Prior to the Affirmed, Villainage finished fourth in the Birdonthewire Stakes and second in the Dr. Fager.

Green Vegas is also a son of Trippi who has the advantage of winning a race around two turns after an impressive score in the Foolish Pleasure Breeders' Cup at one mile and 70 yards three weeks ago.

Plesa sends out the probable favorite in the My Dear Girl Division in Centaur Farm's homebred Adhrhythm as part of his uncoupled trio.

A daughter of Adhocracy, Adhrhythm finished second in her first two starts before breaking her maiden by 6 ¾ lengths going 6 ½ furlongs on Aug. 12. She was even more impressive romping home an 8 ½-length winner of the seven-furlong Susan's Girl Division of the FSS.

Plesa's other two contenders in the race are Padua Stable's homebred Snow Lady and Harold Plumley's Synergy, third and fourth, respectively behind Adhrhythm in the Susan's Girl. Snow Lady, a daughter of Snow Ridge, had won the six-furlong Desert Vixen Division in her previous start. Synergy, by Sweetsouthernsaint, was making only her second start in the Susan's Girl and had trouble in the race.

Silkily finished second in the Desert Vixen and Susan's Girl after a winning debut for trainer Angel Salinas.
