Klein Filly Faces Big Challenge in Pocahontas

(from Churchill Downs report)
Richard, Elaine and Bert Klein's Change Up, on the outside looking in at the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies (gr. I), finds a challenging spot as the probable favorite in Sunday's $100,000-added Pocahontas at Churchill Downs.

Change Up faces 10 foes in the one-mile event for 2-year-old fillies. The Steve Flint-trained daughter of Distorted Humor  will face four fillies that pre-entered in the Juvenile Fillies only to be left out of the maximum field of 14 by the Breeders' Cup selection committee.

The Pocahontas is co-featured with the $100,000-added Iroquois Stakes (GIII) on the opening program of Churchill Downs' fall meet.

Change Up has won twice in four races, including a victory in the Mountaineer Park Juvenile Fillies in August. She was knocked out of Breeders' Cup consideration, however, when she ran seventh to Pocahontas rival Lisa M as the odds-on favorite over a "sloppy" track in the $150,000 Arlington-Washington Breeders' Cup Lassie (gr. III).

"She's competed against fillies that have already won graded stakes," said Flint. "We kind of painted ourselves into a corner running in the Arlington-Washington Lassie, and the track came up horrible. If I to second guess myself on something, I probably would have picked another spot."

Change Up gets a new rider for the Pocahontas in Garrett Gomez.

Standing the way of the Klein filly is a quartet of budding stars that did not make it into the field for the Juvenile Fillies.

Mike Rutherford's Cohiba Miss won the Kentucky Cup Juvenile Fillies for trainer Bernie Flint. Zayat Stables' Baroness Thatcher was an impressive maiden winner for trainer Dale Romans at Keeneland. J. Paul Reddam's Mistical Plan won the Cover Gal for California-bred fillies at Oak Tree at Santa Anita for trainer Doug O'Neill. Joseph Novogratz' Pro Pink was runner-up the Kentucky Breeders' Cup (gr. III) at Churchill Downs for trainer Jamie Sanders.
