Major English Stallion Efisio Dead

Leading English sire Efisio whose champions include Cartier Award winners Attraction and Hever Golf Rose, was euthanized Oct. 31 at Highclere Stud in Berkshire County in England because of laminitis. The 24-year-old son of Formidable stood at Highclere since the mid-1990s.

A group III-winning sprinter in England and a champion miler in Italy, Efisio made a name for himself as a sire of champion sprinters and milers. Attraction not only was the Cartier 2-year-old filly of 2003, but she also won the filly mile classics One Thousand Guineas (Eng-I) and Boylesports Irish One Thousand Guineas (Ire-I) and was an Irish champion sprinter as a 4-year-old. Hever Golf Rose, Cartier champion sprinter in 1995, was a champion in England, France, Germany, and Italy.

Efisio sired additional sprinter and/or miler champions such as Le Vie Dei Colori (in Italy), Tomba (France and Germany), Pips Pride (Germany), Miss Vegas (Italy), Riberac (England), and Uruk (in Italy). Miss Vegas also was a grade III winner in the U.S., as was another of Efisio's fillies, Heads Will Roll.

Among the other top runners sired by Efisio were English group I-winner sprinter Frizzante. Efisio also sired a top distance runner in Pearly Shells, whose three group wins included a score in the Prix Vermeille Hermitage Barriere de la Baule (Fr-I).

Bred by Lady Sarah Fitzalan-Howard, Efisio was produced from the High Top mare Eldoret. He was pensioned at the time of his death.
