Services Friday for California trainer Joe Garcia

(from Hollywood Park notes)
Funeral services are scheduled Friday in Monrovia for trainer Joe Garcia, who died Nov. 12 in Arcadia of colon cancer. He was 53.

Services are scheduled at 11 a.m. at Live Oak Cemetery, Chapel Site, on 200 E. Duarte Road.

Garcia grew up on the King Ranch in Texas and later became an assistant to Hall of Fame trainer Laz Barrera for 17 years during a period when Barrera trained Affirmed and Bold Forbes.

After Garcia went on his own, he launched the career of Squirtle Squirt and won the 2000 Hollywood Juvenile Championship with him. Transferred to another trainer in 2001, Squirtle Squirt won the Breeders' Cup Sprint.

"He was very popular, a good guy, a nice man," said jockey agent Craig O'Bryan, a close friend. "He put up a valiant fight."

His wife, Patricia, and four children survive Garcia.
