(from Calder report)
Toll Taker, a game second last out behind grade I winner Splendid Blended in an overnight stakes on Dec. 3, returns in the $100,000 Chaposa Springs Handicap Saturday at Calder Race Course with a big chance in a field of only six fillies and mares going seven furlongs.
Jockey Rafael Bejarano gets a return call on Sea Gull Associates’ 4-year-old filly Toll Taker for trainer Tim Hills. The daughter of Bernstein was making up ground with every stride in the 6 1/2–furlong test last out, losing by less than a length. That effort came after a game nose victory going 1 1/16 miles in the Honey Bee Stakes at Meadowlands on Nov. 4.
Judson Streicher’s 4-year-old filly Grecian Lover, with Cornelio Velasquez in the saddle, is a threat for trainer Allen Jerkens after an even fifth-place try last out in the First Flight Handicap (gr. II) at Aqueduct on Nov. 4, beaten only four lengths by the winner. A daughter of Friendly Lover out of graded stakes winner Grecian Flight, Grecian Lover has been competitive this year against tougher competition in New York all season.
Toll Taker and Grecian Lover were both assigned top weight of 116 pounds.
Completing the field for the Chaposa Springs are RJs Racing Stable’s My Monarchos, Carson Springs Farm’s For Gillian, N T S Stable’s Annabill and Hilly Fields Stable’s Pleasant Laughter.
