James Conway’s Dash of Humor, ridden patiently by Brian Hernandez Jr., captured the $75,000 Furl Sail Handicap for fillies and mares by a head Sunday in a tight three-way finish at Fair Grounds Race Course.
The 5-year-old daughter of Distorted Humor trained by Hal Wiggins toured the 1 1/16-mile distance in 1:45.64.
The $75,000 stakes event was carded for the grass but transferred to the main track after heavy rain the last two days.
Dash of Humor paid $10, $6.60, and $4.60, earned her eighth win from 24 lifetime starts and increased her career earnings to $326,049.
“He (Hernandez) is the same rider he was when he won the Eclipse Award (as champion apprentice of 2004),” said Wiggins. “He’s just been in one of those slumps like good hitters get into sometimes. Hopefully, the ride he gave this horse today will jump start him back to a lot more winning rides.”
Lightly regarded Aly’s Vow, 18-1 despite the presence of leading rider Joe Talamo, finished second, returning $14.20 and $9.80 while finishing a neck ahead of Rolling Sea, who paid $5.40.
Lady Pegasus and Fiery Dancer alternated for the early lead while setting most of the early fractions of :23.94, :47.81 and 1:13 but tired.
Elle Runway ran fourth, followed by Cheyenne Spirit, Fiery Dancer, Lady Pegasus, and Culinary.
