Thoroughbred Owners of California will host a free seminar, “Ownership 101,” on Jan. 20, from 8:30 a.m. to noon at Santa Anita Park's Top O’ The Stretch Clockers’ Corner. Scheduled panelists include owners John Amerman and Madeline Auerbach.
Amerman, with his wife Jerry, has developed one of the top horseracing operations in the country, with extensive racing, breeding, and farm interests. He has served on the boards of TOC, Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association (TOBA), and National Thoroughbred Racing Association (NTRA), and he currently serves on the California Horse Racing Board (CHRB).
Auerbach, who has owned Thoroughbreds since 1977, is best known for her success racing and then breeding Unusual Heat and his progeny. She is on the Board of Directors of TOC, and serves as its secretary.
The seminar will cover the ins and outs of racehorse ownership, including acquiring a Thoroughbred, initial investment and operating costs, and the role of the trainer. Attendees will then have a chance to visit the barn area, where they will get an up-close look at a training operation. Trainers hosting barn tours will be Bob Baffert, Steve Knapp, Lisa Lewis, and Marcelo Polanco.
Although it is free and open to the public, reservations are recommended and can be made by calling TOC at (626) 574-6620 or (800) 994-9909.
Santa Anita is located at 285 W. Huntington Drive, Arcadia, CA 91007.
