El Prado Colt and Sky Mesa Filly Top Adena Springs Sale

A colt by El Pradoand a filly by Sky Mesa topped the 2006 Adena Springs South 2-year-olds in training sale March 26 at the auction held at the Williston, Fla., farm.

Eric Fein purchased the colt, now named Mount Grace, out of the grade II winning Saint Ballado mare Saint Bernadette for $220,000. The bay colt is from the family of stakes winner Classy Tricks.

The top selling filly was a $210,000 daughter of Sky Mesa out of the Grindstone mare Mary Goodnight.  Trainer Cam Gambolati purchased her on behalf of Rick Pitino's Ol' Memorial Stable.  The filly is from the family of grade I winner Devil His Dueand grade III winner Griffinite.

Last year, Gambolati purchased stakes winner and former Triple Crown prospect Buffalo Man from the same sale. Buffalo Man injured an ankle prior to the Fountain of Youth Stakes (gr. II) and has since been sent to the sidelines.

For the sale, the Ocala Breeders' Sales Company, which conducted the auction, reported 90 horses sold for a gross of $4,892,000, to average $54,356. The gross was up 11.3% compared to last year's figure of $4,397,000. The average dropped 19.6% compared to last year's figure of $67,646.

"When you sell you hope for a little more, and when you buy you hope for a little less," said Frank Stronach, owner of Adena Springs South. "I am pleased with the horses that we sold. We will go back and you can always do some improvements."
