Auction of Barbaro Saddle Open to Worldwide Bidders

(edited press release)

The saddle that has quickly become known as one of the most sought-after pieces of sports history memorabilia will be auctioned at the annual Mint Jubilee Derby-Eve Gala in Louisville on May 4.

Organizers of the event announced today that bids for saddle worn by Barbaro in the 2006 Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I) will be accepted from interested buyers from both inside and outside the venue.

“We are thrilled that these details have come together,” said Mint Jubilee chairwoman, Julie Spencer. “We are hopeful that by increasing the number of potential bidders, we will be able to raise more money for permanently disabled jockeys.”

The saddle was donated and autographed by jockey Edgar Prado to raise funds for the Permanently Disabled Jockey’s Fund, which offers living and medical expense assistance to injured riders.

The procedure for off-site bidding was announced by Dwight Manley of the Jockeys’ Guild.

 1. Potential bidders must pre-register with the Jockeys’ Guild by Tuesday, May 1 by calling Jami Hall in the Guild office at 866-GO-JOCKS (866-465-6257).

2. Guild representatives will contact registered and approved bidders by phone from the Mint Jubilee as the auction begins

3. Phone bids placed through the Guild will be recognized equally with onsite bidders

The Mint Jubilee is a black-tie benefit gala now in its 11th year. The event benefits the University of Louisville’s James Graham Brown Cancer Center, Gilda’s Club Louisville, and the Permanently Disabled Jockey’s Fund.

The Mint Jubilee Gala is sold out, but dance tickets are available at 502-561-8021.
