Dark Star's '53 Derby Voted Biggest Upset

Dark Star’s victory in the 1953 Kentucky Derby is the greatest upset of all in the classic, according to readers of bloodhorse.com.

In "Greatest Kentucky Derby Upsets," by The Staff of Blood-Horse Publications and published by Eclipse Press, the editors of The Blood-Horse selected their choices for the 12 most unlikely winners of the famed Run for the Roses.

During the weeks leading up to the 133rd running of the Kentucky Derby, bloodhorse.com has hosted an online poll asking our audience which one they consider to be the greatest Kentucky Derby upset ever.

From the more 1,300 votes cast, the top three choices for the greatest Kentucky Derby upset were Dark Star from 1953 with 388 votes, Giacomo from 2005 with 282 votes, and Canonero II from 1971 with 154 votes.
