Edited press release
The richest night of racing in West Virginia is moving from the second weekend in October to the third weekend.
Organizers of the 21st West Virginia Breeders Classics said the event, held at Charles Town Races & Slots, is scheduled for Oct. 20 this year. The eight races for West Virginia-breds will offer total purses in excess of $1 million.
The feature is the $500,000 West Virginia Breeders Classic. Also on the program are the $350,000 Jefferson Security Bank “Cavada” Breeders Classic, and six $100,000 stakes: the Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce Dash for Cash Breeders Classic, the West Virginia Vincent Moscarelli Memorial Breeders Classic, the Triple Crown Nutrition Breeders Classic, the West Virginia “Onion Juice” Breeders Classic, the West Virginia Lottery Breeders Classic, and the West Virginia Division of Tourism Breeders Classic.
In September, $50,000 prep races for the Classics will be carded at Charles Town.
Festivities surrounding the Classics include a gala/dinner dance at the Clarion Hotel in Shepherdstown, W.V., Oct. 18; a golf tournament Oct. 19, and the “Breakfast of Champions” Oct. 20. The breakfast fundraiser features Hall of Fame NFL celebrities and raises money for the Charles Town Race Track Chaplaincy and The United Way, 4-H Horse Clubs of West Virginia, and the Donald MacBeth Memorial Jockey Fund.
