Trainer Wins 13 Races in Arapahoe's First Three Days

Edited press release

Trainer Jon Arnett, leading conditioner at Arapahoe Park in Colorado in 2006, started this year’s meet with a bang when he won five races twice during the first three days of the meet.

Arnett and Quarter Horse trainer John Hammes set the local record last year when they each won five races in one day. Arapahoe opened May 26, and Arnett won five races on opening day. He then won five races May 28, and on May 27, saddled three winners.

That leaves Arnett with 13 victories for the meet in only three days, one-third the number he won during the entire 2006 season.

Three of the May 28 victories were for owner Harry Veruchi, one of Arnett’s top clients. Veruchi and Arnett teamed up for seven winners over the three-day holiday weekend.

Arnett, who ships his stock to Arapahoe Park from New Mexico, gave his horses a three-week break prior to the start of the racing season.  The goal was to give them a rest and time to acclimate.

Arapahoe Park, located in Aurora near Denver, will conduct a 36-day meet this year. Racing will be Saturdays, Sundays, and Mondays through Aug. 12. Racing also will be offered July 4.
