Chic Dancer Looks for Second Straight Modesty Triumph

Eight older females will go postward in the July 21 Modesty Handicap (gr. IIIT) at Arlington Park, including last year's winner Chic Dancer, who is looking to defend her title.

(Edited press release)

Chic Dancer, an upset winner in last year’s Modesty Handicap (gr. IIIT) at Arlington Park, will defend her title when she faces seven rivals, including starting high weight Sohgol, in the 52nd running of the $150,000 race July 21.

The Modesty serves as the final local prep for the $750,000 Beverly D. Stakes (gr. IT), which will be held August 11, and will be run at the Beverly D. distance of a 1 3/16 miles over Arlington’s turf course.

The Modesty is one of three graded stakes that comprise the track’s Million Preview Day program, which also includes the $250,000 American Derby, presented by Jack Daniel’s (gr. IIT), and the $200,000 Arlington Handicap (gr. IIIT).

A daughter of Joyeux Danseur, Chic Dancer showed her affinity for the Arlington turf course when she rallied along to rail to take last year’s Modesty by a half-length to record her first graded stakes victory. Owned by S.D. Brilie Ltd. Partnership and trained by Christine Janks, the mare was slated to take the leap in class and try the Beverly D., but was scratched the morning of the race with a cough.

The 6-year-old mare has finished second in all three of her starts in 2007, including the Reluctant Guest Stakes and the Possibly Perfect Stakes, both on the Arlington lawn. Chic Dancer, who is seven for 15 over that surface, has been assigned 115 pounds for Saturday and will again partner with her regular rider Chris Emigh.

High weighted at 118 pounds for the Modesty is Augustin Stable’s Sohgol, fifth in the Gamely Handicap (gr. IT) at Hollywood Park in her most recent start May 28. Previously, the Neil Drysdale-trained daughter of Singspiel rallied from well off the pace to finish second in the Wilshire Handicap (gr. IIIT) at Hollywood. Robby Albarado has the mount.

The multiple stakes winning filly Brownie Points, who races in the colors of Pin Oak Stable, also merits a chance in the Modesty. The Donnie Von Hemel-trained daughter of Forest Wildcat captured the $125,000 Iowa Distaff at Prairie Meadows June 30 and previously won the $200,000 DeBartolo Oaks on turf at Louisiana Downs and the $100,000 Remington Park Breeders’ Cup Oaks in Oklahoma last fall. Regular rider Luis Quinonez will get the mount in the Modesty.

Completing the field for the Modesty are Almonsoon, Bridge Game, Jennie R., Mabadi, and Rich in Spirit.
