(Edited press release)
The Prevention Council will host its first annual fundraising event, the "Dare to Dream Gala," with honorary chairpersons Marylou Whitney and John Hendrickson at the Saratoga Polo Club Aug. 13.
The gala will celebrate not only the athletic achievements of Jerry Bailey, but also his victory over substance abuse. The event will provide an evening of fine food and entertainment while supporting a non-profit Saratoga region agency.
Bailey has written a book, Against the Odds: Riding for My Life, which focuses on his recovery from alcoholism and his racing career. He has been extensively honored for his athletic achievements, but never for his recovery, and he has expressed that he's very pleased to have this triumph recognized.
"I am thrilled we have the opportunity to honor Mr. Bailey, a world-class athlete who lives every day with the hope that recovery brings," said Prevention Council executive director Judy Ekman. "He deserves the highest recognition and can give support to the dreams of others."
Proceeds from this event will be utilized to improve the lives of local youth, families, and communities. The Prevention Council works in communities and schools to help young people reject drugs and violence. The agency also leads government, private agencies, and community coalitions to build positive environments that support wellness and success.
