Rags To Riches, this year's Belmont Stakes (gr. I) winner, returned to Todd Pletcher’s barn at Belmont Park July 27 following two days at the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine's New Bolton Center, where she had a complete physical exam.
The filly was sent to New Bolton following a training incident July 22 at Belmont Park, when exercise rider Lauren Robson pulled the filly up. Pletcher found nothing wrong and though a subsequent exam by Dr. Steve Allday found her to be sound, Dr. Allday recommended that the filly go to New Bolton for a complete exam.
The results of the exam will be reviewed by Dr. Paul Thorpe, the attending veterinarian for owners Michael Tabor and Derrick Smith, said Pletcher, adding that “Dr. Thorpe will be flying in from Ireland (July 28) to go over the results with us. If everything checks out, well she could still make the Alabama.”
Rags To Riches was the first filly to win the Belmont Stakes in 102 years. She has five wins from five starts in 2007, including the May 4 Kentucky Oaks (gr, I), and the March 11 Santa Anita Oaks (gr. I). She was sired by 1992 Belmont Stakes winner, A.P. Indy, and is a half-sister to 2006 Belmont Stakes winner Jazil.
