A Day At The Spa: Aug. 6, Quotes and More

In honor of (and caused by) an 8:00 a.m. deadline, Hall of Fame inductions, an upcoming afternoon of racing coverage, and an evening of sales assignments, we defer to a smattering of quotes and scenes witnessed by your faithful correspondent, who peruses the backside of Saratoga (almost) every morning.

“I’m like a waitress. I just stand around and take orders and mess them up.” – Jerry Hissam, jockey’s agent for Calvin Borel.

“Have you heard my new ringtone? It’s like an old-fashioned telephone, like the one you grew up with.” “How retro! How unique!” – exchange between two reporters in the Saratoga Press Box

“Horse coming through! We got good ones, bad ones, and mediocre. You just tell me what kind you want.” – Angel Cordero Jr., to crossing guard on Union Avenue.

“Horse coming through! Used to be a good one!” – Cordero the next morning.

“Horse! This one’s just pretty!” – Cordero the next morning.

“Hey, hey, hey, easy with that gate, please. I’ll come back with some WD-40.” – exercise rider when horse spooked at someone closing the gate at the gap.

Seen At Saratoga:
Three memorable grooms; the first strolling across the backside in flip flops and a towel after training hours, the second leading an unhaltered horse with a long string tied around his neck, and the third enroute to the detention barn, walking his charge while texting on his cell phone.

Todd Pletcher standing in the winners’ circle after stealing the Whitney (gr. I) with Lawyer Ron, refusing to wear the purple Breeders’ Cup “Win and You’re In” hat during an ESPN interview, but holding it over his heart as if saying a pledge to the flag – not a single perfectly-groomed hair out of place.

Ramon Dominguez and Javier Castellano taking a brisk jog around outer turf course at 11:50 a.m.
