The officers and board of directors of Thoroughbred Charities of America have selected Bill Casner as recipient of the TCA Charity Leadership Award to be presented at the 18th annual TCA Stallion Season and Art Auction Nov. 30 at Keeneland.
Casner will receive the award for his generous sprit and leadership role in the Thoroughbred industry. In addition to Casner’s support of TCA, he has received the 2005 W.T. Young Humanitarian Award, the 2003 Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association Service Award, and is currently chairman of TOBA and vice-chairman and co-founder of the Kentucky Equine Education Project. Casner is also a founding member of The Race For Education, a national scholarship foundation for children of racing’s backside and farm workers.
A native Texan, Casner put himself through college galloping horses and became a trainer following graduation. In 1979, he left the Thoroughbred business to found Excel Communications with Kenny Troutt. Casner reentered the Thoroughbred industry in the early 1990s and with Troutt formed Winstar Farm near Versailles, Ky., along with several other racing partnerships.
