Jockey Injured in Breakdown at Presque Isle

From Presque Isle Downs

Jockey Enrique Jurado suffered shoulder and knee injuries the evening of Sept. 20 when Risk Assessment, a 3-year-old filly he was riding in the fourth race at Presque Isle Downs, broke down after crossing the finish line.

Risk Assessment, the 7-10 favorite in the field of eight in the maiden special weight test, was 5 1/4 lengths in front at the time of the incident. She was credited with the victory but was euthanized on the track.

The 30-year-old Jurado pitched forward over Risk Assessment’s head as she went down, and the filly then rolled over him. Jurado was taken by ambulance to Hamot Medical Center in Erie, Pa., for treatment.

Jurado, from Lima, Peru, rode for three years at the Monterrico Racecourse in his home country and then moved to South Florida in 1994. He is based at Delaware Park and has 780 career wins.

Risk Assessment, by Came Home, was a Pennsylvania homebred campaigning for George Strawbridge Jr.’s Augustin Stable. She was trained by Jonathan E. Sheppard; ironically, Risk Assessment’s win was the first at Presque Isle for a Hall of Fame conditioner.
