Starcraft Filly Tops at Tattersalls

A low-key second day of the Tattersalls December foal sale in Newmarket, England, Nov. 28 was topped by a filly from the first crop of Northern Hemisphere grade I winner Starcraft.

The half-sister to listed winner Head Over Heels was bought for 65,000 guineas (about $141,000) by Starcraft’s owner, Paul Makin, through Badgers Bloodstock. She was consigned by breeder Jim Mitchell from Beechgrove Stud.

A French-bred Zieten half-sister to recent listed winner Lady Deauville was bought by Warwickshire-based Peter Hughes, who also owns the sibling. He paid 60,000 guineas (about $130,000) for the February-born filly offered by the Castlebridge consignment.

On the second day of the sale, 155 horses sold for 2,431,000 guineas (about $5.28 million), down from 3,286,100 guineas for 173 horses sold during the same session in 2006. The average of 15,684 guineas (about $34,000) was down from 18,995 guineas, and the median of 10,000 guineas (about $22,000) dropped from 15,000 guineas last year.
