Fleming, a food-chain entrepreneur, was instrumental in elevating the prestige of the Golden Slipper Stakes (Aus-I) during his tenure as chairman of the Sydney Turf Club, where he served on the board of directors from 1978 to 1992. He also served as chairman between 1983, and retired in 1992.
