Pletcher Looks For More Records

Pletcher is one win away from tying his own mark for most graded stakes in a season.

Todd Pletcher has two opportunities to tie the North American single-season record for graded stakes wins by a trainer this weekend, a record that he set one year ago.

On Dec. 15, Pletcher will send out 5-year-old mare My Rachel in the $200,000 La Prevoyante Handicap (gr. II) at Calder, and will saddle 2-year-old filly Spritely in the $421,500 Hollywood Starlet (gr. I) at Hollywood Park. If either should win, Pletcher will equal the 57 graded stakes victories mark that he set in 2006.

The previous record of 53 wins was held by Pletcher’s mentor, D. Wayne Lukas.

Pletcher, the three-time reigning Eclipse Award winner for the nation’s top trainer, is also closing in on another one of his records – stakes victories in a season. Last year, he wound up with 100 stakes wins, again breaking a record once held by Lukas. With already 93 wins in 2007, Pletcher has a little over two weeks to garner eight more stakes.

Pletcher has already broken his own record for earnings in a year, having collected more than $28.2 million in purses in 2007.
