Fair Grounds Cancels Final 5 Races

Severe weather forces abbreviated card in New Orleans

Fair Grounds Race Course canceled the final five races of its live racing program Dec. 20 because of weather and track conditions.

“Safety, both for equine and humans, is always going to take first priority,” Fair Grounds president Randy Soth said.

Clubhouse customers received a rain check for use on any other day this season. Live racing programs for the Dec. 20 card can be exchanged for a program on any other day this meet.

Coincidentally, the last weather-related cancellation at Fair Grounds was the Thursday before Christmas one year ago. On Dec. 21, 2006, the entire 10-race card was canceled after heavy morning thunderstorms.

Fair Grounds director of racing Sam Abbey said the canceled races would be brought back as soon as possible.
