Owner, breeder, trainer died at age 76

E.K. "Ted" Cleveland Jr., at various times during his career an owner, breeder and trainer, died Dec. 21. He was 76.

Cleveland was an Ohio native and graduate of Ohio State University but lived most of his life in Central Kentucky.

Cleveland liked to talk about nursing the filly Hoist Emy’s Flag (by Hoist the Flag) through various ailments to win nine of 21 starts and earn $189,580. He trained her to win a division of the La Troienne Stakes (at Churchill Downs and finish second in the Golden Rod Stakes (gr. III) and Barbara Fritchie Handicap (gr. III).

He also liked to tell the story of Bold Jessie, whom he purchased as a yearling in Ireland specifically to keep there and run in the Tattersalls Breeders Stakes, a race open only to horses purchased at a specific auction. She won the race, earning $311,086 in the process. It would turn out to be her only win in nine starts.

As a breeder, Cleveland bred four-time stakes winner Faster Than Sound (by Five Star Flight). Among the other stakes winners he trained was stakes winner Convenient.

Cleveland is survived by two sons, Todd and Paul; two daughters, Ann and Jessica; six grandchildren; and a sister. The family requests donations to Hospice of the Bluegrass, 2312 Alexandria Dr., Lexington, KY 40504.
