A Japanese group III winner, Seeking the Best has a tremendous pedigree. Not only is he by one of Mr. Prospector’s best sons, but his dam, grade III winner Mackie, is a half-sister to five other graded stakes winners.

Seeking the Best is similarly bred to the late Dubai Millennium, who is also by Seeking the Gold out of a Northern Dancer-line mare. Another Seeking the Gold son with a somewhat similar pedigree is Mutakddim, whose second damsire is Northern Dancer. Both Dubai Millennium and Mutakddim have been successful with mares whose pedigrees return Northern Dancer, and this seems a good place to start with Seeking the Best. Mares featuring Danzig close up may be a particularly good choice as Danzig’s son Polish Navy is the sire of Mackie’s Kentucky Derby-winning half-brother Sea Hero while another Danzig son, Chief’s Crown, is the sire of Mackie’s grade III-winning half-sister Coronation Cup. Other Northern Dancer strains that look to have above-average possibilities include Nijinsky II, Dixieland Band, Storm Cat, and Deputy Minister.

Mackie is a half-sister to grade II winner Glowing Honor and to stakes winner Seattle Glow, both by Seattle Slew. As Seeking the Gold himself has a good record with mares returning Seattle Slew, this would also seem to be a promising cross for Seeking the Best. Another potentially important strain to look for in possible mates for Seeking the Best is Buckpasser, who has a history of compatibility with multiple elements of Seeking the Best’s pedigree. Mares returning the War Admiral/*La Troienne cross through sources other than Buckpasser and Seattle Slew should also be considered; names to look for include Mr. Busher, Blue Eyed Momo, and Better Self.

Seeking the Gold himself has done well with mares returning Bold Ruler (especially through Secretariat). Other possible elements to look for in mares for Seeking the Best include Blushing Groom (Fr), Damascus, Halo, and possibly Pleasant Colony and Icecapade. — by Avalyn Hunter
