TrueNicks for Keeneland's Day Three

The top TrueNicks ratings for short yearlings and carried foals for day three.

Moving into the third day of the January sale, we see some new names and new patterns in the TrueNicks Top 10 lists of short yearlings and carried foals.

Topping the short yearlings is hip 841, a daughter of Officer out of the stakes-winning Crowning Decision mare Taylor’s Queen. This turned out to be an inspired mating, as Crowning Decision (by Chief’s Crown) is a grandson of Danzig, and the Officer/Danzig cross has made an astonishing start, having already produced graded stakes winner Officer Cherrie, stakes winners Frisk Her, Chief Officer, and Satulagi, and graded stakes-placed Base Commander. A look at the TrueNicks page – which lists the best five runners on the cross, along with their sire and broodmare sire – shows us something rather interesting, as when we look at the broodmare sires we find that two of the Danzig sources come via Danzig/Sir Gaylord crosses, and another is through Honor Grades (by Danzig out of a mare by Secretariat, a half-brother to Sir Gaylord). This reflects particularly well on hip 841, as her grandsire, Chief’s Crown, is another Danzig/Secretariat cross.

Hip 828 is a filly from the first crop of Roman Ruler out of the stakes-winning Storm Creek mare Stormy Way. This filly’s breeding earns its A++ rating on the basis of three stakes winners by Roman Ruler’s sire, Fusaichi Pegasus, out of mares by Storm Cat. Clearly, a mating which might be expected to generate some hot tempers gives a refinable fire.

One hundred hips later comes a filly by Forest Camp out of the New Zealand-bred stakes winner Connate, who comes from a shuttle crop sired by Danzig’s son Honor Grades. This filly, hip 928, is bred on similar lines to one of Forest Camp’s best winners, the grade II scorer Timber Reserve, whose dam is by Danzig Connection.

Among the carried foals, the top-rated hip by TrueNicks variant score is number 808. Although offered by Bluewater Sales, the prospective foal represents something which could become an Airdrie Stud in-house nick. The dam, Siphonal, by one-time Airdrie resident Siphon, is a sister to stakes winner Entitlement. She is carrying a foal by young Airdrie star Include , who is already sire of stakes-winning and grade I-placed Runway Rosie out of a Siphon mare.

Continuing with in-house pairings, hip 796 combines current and former Three Chimneys Farm residents. Point Given is the covering sire of the Seattle Slew mare Seattle Angel, a half-sister to multiple grade I winner Wekiva Springs. Point Given is off to a great start with Seattle Slew-line mares, getting grade I winner Point Ashley (out of a mare by Slew o’ Gold), 2007 Canadian Horse of the Year Sealy Hill (out of a mare by Boston Harbor), and stakes winner Naseem (out of a mare by ‘Slew’ himself).

Third-rated among the carried foals contingent is available in the form of the young, stakes-producing Valid Expectations mare Expect a While, who is offered as hip 962 in foal to the speedy Mass Media. The dam of Expect the End, a three-time stakes winner in New York-bred company in 2007, Expect a While gets an A++ for her in utero foal who is bred on the same Touch Gold/Valid Appeal cross as stakes winners Eyes on Eddy and Royal Challenger.
