Breeders’ Cup Ltd. announced Jan. 11 that it will contribute $200,000 to Gulfstream Park’s stakes program, adding to the purses of the Gulfstream Park Turf, the Richter Scale, and the Shirley Jones. The Breeders’Cup program has traditionally been linked to these three races.
BC Ltd. will add $100,000 to the purse of the Gulfstream Park Turf (gr. IT), bringing the value of the 1 3/8-mile race for older horses to $350,000. The Gulfstream Park Turf will be run Feb. 23.
The Shirley Jones (gr. II) and the Richter Scale (gr. II), both at seven furlongs, will now be worth $200,000 each after receiving a $50,000 boost to their purses. The Richter Scale, for older horses of both sexes, will be run March 8; the Shirley Jones is for older filly and mares to be run March 22.
“We’re delighted that the Breeders’ Cup has chosen to be part of another Gulfstream meeting, and we believe their participation speaks to the quality of our stakes program,” Gulfstream Park’s Racing Secretary Bill Couch said.
