Eclipse Breeder: Adena Springs

Stronach’s Adena Springs was voted the outstanding breeder for a record fifth time.

As a result of finishing 2007 as the leading breeder by earnings for the fifth consecutive year, Frank Stronach’s Adena Springs was voted the outstanding breeder of the year for a record fifth time. The operation was also the leading breeder in 2000 and from 2004-06. The only other four-time Eclipse award-winning breeder is Juddmonte Farms.

A total of 564 starters represented Adena Springs as breeder in 3,479 starts in 2007. In all, those runners won 538 times and finished second or third 988 times while earning $18,055,772. Adena’s closest competitor by earnings, Sez Who Thoroughbreds, finished the year more than $10 million behind with 267 starters earning $7,856,427.

Four grade I winners represented Adena Springs during the year, and sweeter still is the fact that Ginger Punch, Sugar Shake, and Citronnade raced as homebreds. Wicked Style, whom Adena sold as a yearling for $55,000, passed through the sale ring two more times before being purchased by his owner, Glenn Bromagen.

Adena Springs also bred grade II winners Cobalt Blue and Going Ballistic as well as grade III winners Hello Lucky and Just Rushing. Of the eight graded stakes winners bred by Adena in 2007, only Citronnade is not by a stallion that stood at one of Adena’s stud farms at the time of their conception.

In all, 22 individual Adena-breds won stakes races, claiming 43 added-money events, 18 of them graded. Of those 22 stakes winners, 18 of them are by current or one-time Adena stallions.
