Fasig-Tipton Catalogs 270 Juveniles

Florida select sale of 2-year-olds in training will be held Feb. 26.

Fasig-Tipton has cataloged 270 horses for its Florida select sale of 2-year-olds in training, which will be held at Calder Race Course Feb. 26. The number is down 10.3% from the 2007 total of 301.

"We expected the numbers to be down a little bit, and they are," said Fasig-Tipton executive Boyd Browning about the size of this year's catalog. "There were a few less yearlings bought by pinhookers last year for this year's select (juvenile) sales because they had a little less capital to work with than they did in the past. I'm still very confident in the quality of the horses, and I'm very optimistic going into the sale."

Fasig-Tipton has cut the number of under tack shows for the auction from two to one this year. The lone show will be held on Feb. 22 at Calder.

Last year's sale established a world juvenile auction record of $250,000 for median price. However, its gross declined 29.9% from the all-time high for a juvenile sale of $62,187,000, set in 2006, to $43,622,000. The average price fell 12.9% from the world juvenile auction mark of $403,812, to $351,791.
