2003 by Maria’s Mon–True Flare, by Capote.
By Avalyn Hunter
Latent Heat scored his biggest wins in back-to-back victories in the 2006 Malibu Stakes (gr, I) and the 2007 San Carlos Handicap (gr. I), both over seven furlongs at Santa Anita. Sired by a juvenile champion, he is out of a grade II winner and is a half-brother to graded stakes winners Indian Flare (by Blushing Groom [Fr]) and Art Master (by Royal Academy).
Latent Heat is an outcross to both the Northern Dancer and Hail to Reason male lines. In his short stud career, Maria's Mon got two of his thirteen graded stakes winners from mares returning Vice Regent’s son Deputy Minister. As this strain has also worked quite well with Capote, Deputy Minister and Vice Regent look like good potential crosses with Latent Heat. Other Northern Dancer strains that look like possibilities with Latent Heat include Storm Cat, Dixieland Band, and possibly Danzig.
Among the various Hail to Reason strains, Maria’s Mon got both Kentucky Derby winner Monarchos and multiple grade II winner Strong Contender from mares with pedigrees featuring Roberto in combination with *Ribot and the Golden Trail family.
Dynaformer, the broodmare sire of Strong Contender, combines these bloodlines and may be a good cross for Latent Heat; another possible source is Brian’s Time, though he is very rare in North America. Halo, Sir Gaylord, and Best Turn could also be useful.
Seeking the Gold and Miswaki may be useful targets for inbreeding to Mr. Prospector through Latent Heat. Both, of course, bring in more Buckpasser, and another intriguing source of Buckpasser could be Buckaroo, a full brother to the third dam of Latent Heat. Returns of Raise a Native through sources other than Mr. Prospector may also do well, as may returns of Native Dancer through daughters.
Among other bloodlines, In Reality and Blushing Groom may also be worth a look, as well as Tom Fool through sources other than Buckpasser.
