A half-brother to classics contender Pyro was born March 12 at 10:15 p.m. at the Winchell family’s Corinthia near Lexington. Sired by Tapit , he is a dark bay or brown colt like his famous half-brother. Both are owned by Winchell Thoroughbreds, an operation comprised of Joan Winchell and her son, Ron.
“The colt is doing great,” said farm manager David Fiske.
Pyro, who is ranked No. 1 on Steve Haskin’s Derby Dozen, captured the March 8 Louisiana Derby (gr. II) and won the Risen Star Stakes (gr. III) in February in his two starts this year. The homebred son of Pulpit out of the Wild Again mare Wild Vision reached the $1-million mark with his score in the Louisiana Derby.
Wild Vision, who was bred by Joan Winchell’s late husband, Verne, is booked to Pulpit.
Tapit was a grade I winner for Ron Winchell. He stands at the Beck family’s Gainesway Farm near Lexington.
