Vinery Moves Horses From Asmussen

Stable could have horses with leading trainer again in the future.

After July 10, Vinery will no longer have horses with trainer Steve Asmussen. But Tom Ludt, general manager of the farm, said it is likely the stable will have horses with Asmussen again at some point in the future.

“We certainly could have horses with Steve again in the future,” Ludt said. “It has been a great ride. We just wanted to go a different direction.”

Ludt said the 19 horses that were with Asmussen have been sent to four trainers previously employed by Vinery -- Larry Jones, Doug O'Neill, Josie Carroll and Mike Trombetta -- and two were sent to Mike Stidham.

Several factors influenced the decision, Ludt said, not solely the fact Asmussen was recently notified of a drug positive in Texas.

“We wanted to spread the horses out and go a different direction,” he said.

Ludt said Vinery has 54 horses in training.
