Hawthorne Race Course will honor jockey Earlie Fires with a bobble head doll on April 26. A Hall of Fame rider, and a mainstay on the Chicago circuit, Fires is second on the all-time riding leaders in Hawthorne history and has won over 6,000 races in his career. The bobble head dolls will be given to the first 3,000 fans with paid admission. Fires is featured wearing the familiar silks of Leonard Lavin. ...The New England Turf Writers Association elected its officers for 2003 at its annual spring meeting. Re-elected for her third-term as president is Lynne Snierson, director of communications and marketing for Rockingham Park. Serving his first term as vice president will be Christian Teja, director of public and media relations at Suffolk Downs. Chip Bott, the track photographer at Suffolk Downs, has been tabbed for his third consecutive term as secretary-treasurer. The New England Turf Writers Association also announced that its annual award given to the top turf male would be named in memory of Joseph E. Carey Jr., the president and owner of Rockingham Park who died March 9 of this year.
