Six-time Sovereign Award-winning jockey Todd Kabel has decided to sit out the rest of the 2008 Canadian racing season due to weight issues.
Kabel, who also won a Sovereign as the county's top apprentice, rode in 53 races this year, winning four and posting 15 top-three finishes.
"He's hung it up for the year," said John Bell, Kabel's long-time agent. "His weight problem, he just couldn't keep his weight down to the level he wanted."
A native of McCreary, Manitoba, Kabel began his riding career in 1984. He has won 3,168 races, including 307 stakes, 67 graded.
Kabel has won the Queen's Plate twice, in 1995 with Regal Discovery and in 2000 with Scatter The Gold.
Last year, the 42-year-old won 10 Woodbine stakes and partnered champion 3-year-old male Alezzandro to victory in the Prince of Wales Stakes.
